We will present here a methodology to compute the Impedance of a Microstrip Transmission line using HSPICE 2D field solver. We show below the computation using the formula method. It gives 57 Ohms impedance for a 5 mils trace width and 4 mils separation from ground.

Parameters in HSPICE are names that can be assigned numeric values. Its simplest use is to assign a particular value at the beginning of hspice code. If this parameter is used many times in the code, we just need to change the value of the parameter only once and not at all places.

Let us now modify the hspice code to introduce some real life imperfections and see how it affects the waveforms. Let us change the source resistor to 40 Ohms in the above reflected wave simulation.

Let us remove the termination resistor by commenting out the termination resistance as
*Rtermination 4 0 50

This creates a circuit situation similar to the PCI Bus. The waveform gets reflected at the receiver and doubles. Here is the hspice code.
